Boating license

Queenslanders love getting out on the water -  there are approximately three times as many registered boat licences as there are registered boats in the state.

In Queensland you are required to have a recreational marine licence if you are operating a vessel that is powered by a motor greater than 6Hp and you must have a personal watercraft licence to operate a personal watercraft (e.g Jet Ski).  It is important to note that a recreational marine licence is a seperate licence to a personal watercraft licence.

To obtain a recreational marine licence and a personal watercraft licence you must:

  • Be aged 16 years or older.
  • Demonstrate that you are competent to navigate and manage a recreational boat by successfully completing an approved BoatSafe Training Course.  Click here for a list of training providers who are members of Marine Queensland.  Jet Ski
  • Complete and present the Medical Fitness Disclosure Statement and present it to the BoatSafe Training Provider at enrolment for the training course.
  • Provide satisfactory evidence of identiy - a photgraphic Queensland Driver Licence (current or expired less than two years) is acceptable.

For further information on obtaining a recreational marine licence and personal watercraft licence can be found on the Maritime Safety Queensland website (www.msq.qld.gov.au).
